Resin Driveway over Concrete
Installing a resin driveway over concrete provides an easy and cost effective way of enhancing the appearance of your driveway.
By installing a resin surface over an existing surface such as concrete or tarmacadam you can cut out costly sub base installation costs.
These are typically up to 50% of an installation, done from scratch!
Would you like to save up to 50% for a resin driveway over concrete installation?

Are you thinking of a resin driveway over concrete installation?
Make sure you read out tips on suitability below before considering this.
If you feel an overlay is something you require, it’s imperative that full consideration is given to the suitability of the existing area.
You don’t want cracks showing through like icing ‘cracking on a cake’ – do you?
Resin Driveway Over Concrete
Not all Concrete Surfacing is Suitable For a Resin Overlay – 4 Things to look out for…..
Firstly:
Is the existing concrete surface in structurally sound condition?
If there are gaping cracks then it’s probably not a good idea to place a mixture of resin over the top.
If you do – the newly laid resin surface will just weaken and crack in the same areas as the concrete sub base underneath!
Whilst there are very good concrete crack ‘filling‘ materials on the market, these are best suited to small cracks.
So this is an important consideration.
Secondly:
Consideration must be given to surface water drainage. If water drains to an existing bedding area then there shouldn’t be any problem.
However, if there are existing pools of water after a downpour on the current driveway surface then clearly water isn’t draining away. So, if resin is laid on top of such a surface the water will sit between the concrete surface and the resin one.
This will eventually cause the resin bound driveway surface to fail and crack and possibly crumble away.
Thirdly:
If new edging is being put in place, can an area be dug out around the existing concrete surface without disturbing the bulk of the concrete slab?
In general, much will depend on the age of the concrete surface. Very old concrete or thinly laid concrete surfaces may weaken across their entire surface once drilling begins around the edges.
So, unless you were there when the original concrete surface was laid, you simply won’t know what the depth of the concrete is. Caution is therefore urged.
And finally:
If the existing concrete surface is thick enough, drill holes (bore holes) can be put in to drain water away once it seeps through the newly laid resin surface.
Keep in mind that opinions vary as to the overall stability of surfaces installed this way so if there are a number of vehicles being parked or heavy vehicles this may not be the way to go.
We know installers that will refuse to install such drainage and others that will proceed if their survey confirms structural soundness.
In summary, there are lots of considerations. Whilst price may be a primary motivator for opting for an overlay careful attention must be paid to suitability. This cannot be emphasised enough!
We hope you’ve found this useful and many many people opt for laying resin over decent existing concrete areas – with no issues at all.
In complete contrast there are commercial installers of resin (shopping areas, beach fronts etc) that do not view resin as a suitable surface for driveays – at all!
Ultimately, it’s your decision.
