Top 9 Best Fire Pits for 2023 – Keep warm and cosy this winter
Who doesn’t love the warmth and glow of a crackling fire on a summer’s evening or a crisp autumn day?
It allows you to spend quality time with friends and loved ones in a relaxed atmosphere. While firepits are often used in summer, in our opinion, they are just as enjoyable in autumn and winter. Imagine a crips autumn day around the fire with a hot chocolate or cup of tea. Some marshmallows above the fire perhaps?
A comfy chair and a blanket around your shoulders and you will stay warm for hours!
Winter BBQ’s are becoming more popular, and of course your firepit can easily be transformed into a BBQ at any time of year!
The great thing about fire pits is that once you have purchased your perfect firepit, you can spent many hours socialising without spending any additional money. Thus, creating a cost effective way to spend memorable time with friends and family.
The only risk you’ll have is that setting up the logs and starting a fire becomes so addictive that you find yourself in your garden more often than you ever planned!
And that is precisely what many of us need. More beautiful and memorable moments with loved ones. A laugh and a joke, some good conversations or maybe just some alone time with a book and a crackling fire.
We have found the best fire pits for 2023 for your ease. See our Fire Pit Buying Guide further down the page.

How to choose your perfect fire pit – fire pit buyers guide 2023
While you might think that there are limited used to firepits, then of course you are right.
You can either warm yourself around the fire or possibly turn your fire pit into a grill.
However, not all fire pits are made equal. Not all can be converted into a BBQ, the materials differ greatly, and the design can make all the difference in the heat it generates.
Therefore, we have put together this fire pit buyers guide so you can choose which fire pit suits your needs best.
First decide the main reason why you want a fire pit.
Consider the following for your perfect fire pit:
- Fuel type. Do you like the fire aspect, or do you want it for warmth?
- Do you want to use it as a grill?
- Will you use it all year round?
- What material do you like
- What shape do you prefer?
- Fixed or movable?
Fuel type
Most of us might think of logs on the fire when we think of a fire pit. However, there are many gas fire pits on the market as well, giving of a consisting temperature which you can adjust to your needs.
While these have flames as well, they are not quite like the flames a log fire generates. The dancing flames which are so mesmerising is what sells a conventional fire pit to many people.
Gas fire pits are suitable for a patio or garden, where the seating area is set up and the fire pit will be in one position. You often find these fire pits integrated in table tops. The benefit of a gas fire pit is that you will get the flames and warmth without the smoke! A great gas fire pit is the VonHaus Round Gas Fire Pit which comes with a rain cover for protection.
Wood fire pits on the other hand are often lighter and can be movable, not only around the garden but also to the beach or a campground.
BBQ option
Some fire pits come with a grill, sometimes even with brackets to adjust the hight of the grill for easier control of the heat when cooking.
There are also some great designs like the Quan Quadro Fire Pit which has a tempered steel edging for cooking, which can be controlled temperature wise as well.
Any bowl fire pits can be used as a BBQ by simply laying an oven rack on top of the fire pit, though some do come with a round grill which fits the firepit neatly.
Summer use or all year round
Some fire pits are weatherproof and can therefore be left outdoors in all weather conditions. Some come with a rain cover to protect it from the elements and others should be kept indoors (in the shed or garage) after the summer as they rust away over winter.
If you are planning to use your fire pit occasionally (or often) in the autumn and winter (which we highly recommend!) then you should consider the size and weight of the fire pit for easy storage and retrieval or invest in a durable firepit (possibly with rain cover as well).
The VonHaus Fire Pit is a great example of a durable firepit as it’s rust-, frost- and UV-resistant.
Material
We touched on the material briefly when we discussed the use of the fire pit just in summer or all year round. Some metals are stronger than others and this is often reflected in the price of the fire pit.
Then best metal fire pits are cast iron metal firepits rather than a mixture of metals as these often burn through with the heath of the fire. Cast iron fire pits store and release heath long after the fire has died down which means you will need less logs to keep you warm. A great large cast iron fire pit is the Gardenesque Hoole Fire Pit.
Concrete or MgO firepits don’t rust and are therefore a great all year round fire pit option as well.
Shape of the firepit
A popular fire pit shape is the bowl fire pit. They are often low to the ground but often have legs to lift it off the ground.
Many integrated gas fire pits are the same shape of the table (often rectangular) while many of the wood fire pits are round so more people can easily sit around the fire pit.
There is also the option of choosing a fire pit which is higher of the ground or has openings on the sides of the firepit for better heat distribution. A great example of this is the Aspen Fire Pit which has openings on the sides and the
Some very cool firepits are available in completely different shapes like the retro Kool Kombi Fire Pit which is in the shape of a retro VW Van. Awesome!
Fixed or Movable?
This comes down to the size and weight of your firepit. Smaller and lighter versions can be moved and taken on a camping trip or a day trip to the beach for example. The Empire Fire Bowl, while made of cast iron, is small enough to take camping.
Gas fire pits will be more fixed features in your garden and often come with a protected cover against the elements.
